Whether its entrepreneurial start-ups or well known corporates, as a Graduate trainee you’ll get the chance to work directly with our customers, building a deep understanding of the sectors they work in.

About the programme

Within our Customer Solutions pathway you can apply to either our Commercial Banking programme or our Structured Finance programme. Both these two year programmes are designed to equip you with the skills and experiences you’ll need to become a leading commercial or corporate banker.

The Commercial Banking programme provides a comprehensive grounding in commercial and corporate banking, and will see you working directly with a diverse range of business and corporate customers. Our Structured Finance programme focuses more specifically on larger clients, with complex financing needs. It will provide you with the specialist skills to build your career across a wide range of debt financing products.

The programmes will have market facing compensation. On top of your salary you’ll also have access to our flexible benefits package.

On both programmes, you can look forward to:

  • Gaining experience of building client relationships
  • Developing a deep understanding of our customers’ needs, and expertise in the products we offer
  • Building robust credit, lending and risk management skills
  • Acquiring insight into product development, deal execution and digital banking
  • Developing the confidence to raise ideas, develop solutions and challenge the status quo

After a full induction, each programme is structured around four six month rotations, each based in different areas of our Customer Solutions business.

On completing the programme, we hope to see you join us in a permanent role. We’ll be advising you on career development throughout your journey, but particularly during your last rotation, where we’ll focus on which roles could be right for you.

The Customer Solutions pathway is excellent preparation for a wide range of career paths, and some of the potential next roles you could move into may include:

Supporting you

We pride ourselves on the professional support we offer our graduates, and the friendly, down to earth community they have shaped.

Before you join us, you’ll be paired with a ‘buddy’ (a graduate already on the programme) who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.

You’ll also be assigned a Graduate Coach and a Placement Manager. Your Graduate Coach will be there to provide support throughout the programme, and will work with you to create a personal Capability Plan; your Placement Manager will provide rotation specific support, and will change with each placement. Together, they’ll help you reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.

Learning Journey

  1. Induction

    This will include meeting your buddy and support team, getting to know your fellow graduates, and taking part in an in-depth induction period, which will give you a broad understanding of how RBS works, our values, and our goals.

    You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.

  2. Rotations

    After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. You’ll be assigned a line manager and team in Commercial Banking or Structured Finance (depending on your programme) and be immersed in their work for 6 months.

    For the remaining rotations you’ll have time to discuss options with your support team and apply to the areas that interest you. The final selection will depend on both your motivations and the business’ needs.

    The scale and diversity of RBS means you’ll benefit from an excellent range of placement options. The overall aim of the rotation system is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do. So, wherever you go, variety is key.

  3. Qualifications

    As you progress through each rotation you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need.

    This will involve undertaking a recognised formal qualification, such as the Chartered Banker or the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) programme.

  4. Community Project

    During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support their work.

    You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!

  5. Future capability plan

    During your final rotation you’ll discuss career plans with your support team, so you’ll be ready for the transition to a permanent role. The decisions you make here won’t be spur of the moment – they’ll be the result of long standing discussions, and a carefully crafted Future Capability Plan that runs throughout the duration of these programmes.

    From start to finish, this plan will empower you to develop your talents and tailor your own learning journey, while covering the core themes which are central to our business’ success. It will form the basis of discussions with your support team, and incorporate formal and self-led learning.

About you

You’ll need to be on course for, or already possess, a 2:1 in your degree. There’s no one subject area we have in mind, but we’ll be looking out for people:
