About the programme
During this three year programme you’ll develop a deep understanding of how the bank is run, while completing an industry recognised qualification. There’ll be a requirement to complete at least one rotation in an alternative location. London graduates will spend at least one rotation in Edinburgh and vice versa.
As a Graduate trainee you’ll gain up to date knowledge regarding the changing financial services environment, and relevant changes for the bank. You’ll develop an equally diverse set of skills. From preparing key documentation for regulatory or management reporting, to providing your financial or commercial insight to business executives, we want you to bring your fresh approach and enthusiasm to the table.
We'll reward you with a starting salary of £30,700. On top of your salary you’ll also have access to our flexible benefits package.
After a full induction, you’ll begin your placement based in Finance. Over the three years in this programme you’ll develop your knowledge and experience and you can expect to:
- Gain a Professional Accountancy qualification
- Build thorough knowledge of the Finance functions service offerings delivered through control, expertise, advisory and transactional services
- Develop an understanding of our core activities, such as managing the bank’s balance sheet, reporting on financial performance and developing a long term financial strategy
- Develop excellent relationship management skills, honed by managing multiple stakeholders from a range of businesses
At the end of the three years, we hope to see you joining us in a permanent role.
As your experience grows, you’ll be developing the skills that could lead you into various roles including but not exclusive to:
- Specialist roles in Tax, Treasury, Strategy and Corporate Development
- Managerial roles across the Finance function
- Business Partner and Business Intelligence roles in our customer and non-customer facing businesses
We pride ourselves on the professional support we offer our graduates, and the friendly, down to earth community our graduates have shaped themselves.
Before you start, we’ll pair you with a ‘buddy’ who’ll be a graduate already on the programme, and who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.
We’ll also assign you a Graduate Coach who’ll be there to provide you with support throughout the programme, and will work with you to create a personal development plan. Your Graduate Coach will help you to reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.
For a fuller picture of how you’ll progress through the programme and the support you’ll receive at each stage, check out the Graduate Professional Development journey below.
If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our onboarding portal for successful graduates. It’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting, and who’ll help you settle in. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.
#Banking, #RBS is a programme we’ve designed to help you get ready for day one and beyond. It’ll help you build your knowledge and skills throughout, and help you understand how our entire business operates.
The training focuses on:
- How our business is structured
- Who our customers are
- How we manage risk
- How we’re innovating and the external business climate
- Networking with other business areas
- Seeing the front to back and back to front of our whole operation
We start your training before your first day where you’ll complete some short, bite sized activities that we’ll then build on when you join. After you start, you’ll have the chance to take part in a series of learning activities to improve your understanding of our whole business, how we’re connected with each other, and how we drive successful customer outcomes.
This will include meeting your buddy and support team, getting to know your fellow graduates, and taking part in an in-depth induction period, which will give you a broad understanding of how RBS works, our values, and our goals.
You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.
After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. We’ll assign you a business area, placement manager and team in our Finance function, so you can be immersed in their work.
For the remaining rotations you’ll move across various teams to build a diverse skill set that supports the business and our customers. You’ll have an opportunity to tell us your preferences for the final placement, but selection will depend on both your motivations and the business’s needs.
The scale and diversity of RBS means you’ll benefit from an excellent range of placement options. The overall aim of the rotation system is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do.
As you progress through the programme, you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need.
You’ll also be able to undertake a Professional Accountancy qualification.
During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support its work.
You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!
To be eligible for our Finance programme, you’ll need to have, or be on course to achieve a 2:1 in your degree.
We’re looking for people who are analytical thinkers, able to overcome a range of challenges. You’ll have first class written and verbal communication skills, and the interpersonal skills to negotiate and challenge as appropriate.
You’ll also have real initiative and resourcefulness when it comes to your work, with a meticulous approach to problem solving and attention to detail.
Starting your career with Finance will give you a unique opportunity to quickly gain experience and insight into the financial services industry, its products and operations. You’ll also interact with and learn from respected industry leaders.
